Michael Moore and John Dikeman join Stichting dOeK!

Stichting dOeK welcomes two new core members, Michael Moore and John Dikeman! Now that Cor Fuhler has moved to Australia it made sense to invite an Amsterdam based musician, or in this case musicians, to join the team. Michael Moore and John Dikeman represent different generations and methods of music making which will enrich and diversify Stichting dOeK. They are also both Americans, which is not entirely coincidental, as dOeK looks forward to taking advantage of their different cultural viewpoints.
Michael Moore is a true veteran of improvised music, having been a part of the Dutch and international improvised music scene since the early 1980's. His lyrical clarinet and saxophone playing draws international acclaim as well as his stellar compositional and arranging abilities. Michael was awarded one of the biggest honors in Dutch jazz: the Boy Edgar Prijs in 1986. He has also been a long standing member of ICP (Instant Composers Pool), Available Jelly, as well as the leader of numerous groups of his own which have included the Clusone Trio, The Persons, Jewels and Binoculars, Michael Moore Trio, Quartet and Quintet as well as the most recent Fragile Quartet. Michael Moore created his own label, Ramboy Records, in 1991, a label which has released 30 (+1) records to date. Michael is also an educator and currently works on the faculty at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen.
John Dikeman represents the younger generation of improvisers in the Dutch scene. Having lived in New York, Philadelphia, Cairo, Budapest, and several other locals before arriving in Holland, he had already developed his improvisational skills working with such musicians as Jack Wright, Nate Wooley, Mike Pride, Daniel Carter, Tatsuya Nakatani, etc. Since arriving in Amsterdam in 2008, John has quickly been integrated into the improvised music scene, performing with everyone from Han Bennink and Ab Baars to Terrie Ex and Andy Moor as well as all of the core members of dOeK. John has also forged a new path with projects such as Cactus Truck which represent a form of improvised music which is very far from the history of "New Dutch Swing." This year John was award the Young VIP tour which will feature his band Cactus Truck plus guests including Jon Rune Strøm, Jeb Bishop, Peter Jacquemyn, Nicolau Laféta and Dave Rempis. John has also been active as an organizer in Amsterdam curating the Tabula Rasa series at the Maarten Luther Kerk and working with the Music and Dance curators team at OT301.

2011 in retrospect

Last year was a busy and successful one for dOeK. Here some highlights:
On Michael Moore's label Ramboy: a live recording of Available Jelly's wonderful concert in 2007 (PlusEtage in Baarle Nassau).
Dutch impro Academy
Together with Stichting ICP and Stichting BikBentBraam, dOeK organized the second Dutch Impro Academy, a week long summer school devoted to the fine art of improvising Dutch style. dOeK musicians Eric Boeren and Wolter Wierbos joined Anne La Berge, Han Bennink, Mary Oliver and Bart van der Putten to make up the teaching staff. Four days of workshops and informal concerts in Steim and Zaal 100 were followed by concerts in the Bimhuis and at the ZomerJazzFietsTour. All involved had a great time and were uniformly enthusiastic about the process and the results.
dOeK musicians and Istanbul improvisers have crossed paths quite often in the last few years. dOeK cemented this exchange in 2011 with visits by Eric Boeren, Michael Moore, Wolter Wierbos and Wilbert de Joode to Istanbul to play and record. Laptop musician Korhan Erel paid a return visit to Amsterdam in December. We hope to develop and deepen this contact in 2012 with the project IstanPool, where 4 Dutch and 4 Turkish musicians meet up for intensive rehearsals and concerts in various Dutch venues.
The Amsterdam Real Book brought together established Amsterdam based improvisers and a new generation of improvising musicians from all over the world who have made this city their home. Performing in various constellations the 14 musicians shook up compositions that form the history and language of the Amsterdam impro scene. Over a period of 5 days the Real Book ensemble worked together in a different venue – Zaal 100, MLK, OT301, MuzyQ and Serah Artisan - presenting the results every evening in a concert.
Also thanks
And thanks to the Fonds Podiumkunsten for helping to make the year possible. Most of all thanks to all the musicians for making so much great music possible!

Led by Oscar Jan Hoogland and Michael Moore, and with a guest role for cellist Tristan Honsinger, the Amsterdam Real Book brings together established Amsterdam based improvisers and a new generation of musicians. Performing in various constellations, they will investigate the relationship between composition and improvisation using compositions that have formed the history and language of ‘compimpro’ music in Amsterdam over the last thirty years. Oscar Jan and Michael have compiled a list of compositions from which the final choice of repertoire will be made, by such composers as Ab Baars, Sean Bergin, Eric Boeren, Willem Breuker, Joost Buis, Jack Bulterman, Pierre Courbois, Leo Cuypers, Ernst Glerum, Ig Henneman, Tristan Honsinger, Theo Loevendie, Misha Mengelberg, Michael Moore, Roger van Otterloo and Paul Termos. Some of the compositions are drawn from the first edition of the NL Real Book.
The Amsterdam Real Book band is drawn from two Amsterdam scenes, the first a new young scene that has sprung up over the last five years, very international in make-up and largely focused on completely free improvisation - Yedo Gibson (BR) reeds; John Dikeman (VS), Natalio Sued (AR) tenor sax; Oscar Jan Hoogland (NL), Andrea Taeggi (IT) piano; Jasper Stadhouders (NL), Mikael Szafirowski (FI) guitar; Harald Austbø (NO/NL) cello; Onno Govaert (NL), Gerri Jäger (AT) drums. The second scene comprises well-established Amsterdam improvisers with their rich tradition of merging composition and free improvisation - Eric Boeren cornet; Michael Moore clarinet, alto saxophone; Wolter Wierbos trombone; Tristan Honsinger cello.
Zaal 100 plays host to the first day of the Amsterdam Real Book. Tristan Honsinger will lead a 12 member ensemble comprising Andrea, Eric, Gerri, Jasper, John, Michael, Mikael, Natalio, Onno, Oscar Jan, Wolter and Yedo. After rehearsing all day the first Real Book performance will take place from 8 - 9 pm, followed by the usual Tuesday night Jazzcafé, this time with Ig Henneman, Fred van Duijnhoven and Oscar Jan Hoogland.
On Wednesday 23rd the Real Book moves to the Maarten Lutherkerk in Amsterdam Zuid. Oscar Jan will choose the repertoire, for the rest the group will work without a leader. Participating musicians: Andrea, Jasper, John, Mikael, Onno, Oscar Jan, Wolter and Yedo.
At OT301 on the following evening the Real Book musicians - Andrea, Eric, Gerri, Jasper, John, Mikael, Onno, Oscar Jan, Wolter and Yedo - will share the bill with Victoire, a new chamber-rock ensemble from New York featuring Missy Mazzoli. Fun!
Friday night sees the action move to MuzyQ. Michael Moore will lead the group, which will work on Available Jelly repertoire. The merry band comprises Andrea, Eric, Harald, Jasper, John, Mikael, Natalio, Onno, Oscar Jan, Wolter and Yedo.
After a day's R & R, the Amsterdam Real Book heads north to Zaandam and the beautiful Serah Artisan for a Sunday afternoon concert featuring Andrea, Eric, Harald, John, Michael, Mikael, Onno, Oscar Jan and Yedo.
Tickets for sale at the participating venues. Visitor to three concerts or more receive an Amsterdam Real Book T-shirt or a copy of the NL Real Book for free.

The Ambush Party at 12 Points: Impossible to resist
Impossible to predict, and impossible to resist
Amsterdam-based outfit The Ambush Party play improvised music that is impossible to predict, and impossible to resist. Oscar Jan Hoogland’s prepared piano lines are brilliant and unhinged; who knew a milk frother could be used to make a piano rumble with such emotion? The band sketch out the merest of musical lines, and than duck, jab and weave their way around them, little punches of percussion and sudden stabs of cymbals from Marcos Baggiani circling and irritating the piano, while Harald Austbø drags groans and moans from his cello and himself, before bursting into a voice that could rouse Wagner from a slumber. Meanwhile tenor saxophonist Natalio Sued wears the pained expression, and has the desultory brassy honks and howls of a man who believes he is the only sane one in the asylum. For every moment of chaos, though, there is clockwork efficiency beneath the melee that keeps the whole, swaggering bandwagon whirling onwards and upwards into unified bursts of sound that break like a storm. There is rigorous, meticulous magic at work here. This is music as theatre, and as exciting, engaging and humorous a band as you are likely to see. Seek them out, and leave any preconceived notions at the door because they will be of no use to you.
Review 12 Points Festival performance: Laurence Mackin, Irish Times, May 5 2011
