Wierbos (DATA:824)

Hilary Jeffery’s trombone playing resembles that of Wolter Wierbos up to a point. The Dutch trombone great made a solo record twenty years ago, which is here first iussued on CD. He engages in outlandish sound research, for instance in the ultra short I Can’t Dance, but can also be tearfully lyrical, as in the opener Salland (the area of the Netherlands where he was born) and the thematically and geographically related Holterberg. In Mutey he explores the possibilities of the mute and in Brummel he plays magnificent multiphonics. The tracks from 1982 are all fairly short, the added Doek, recorded twenty years later, has him kicking over the traces with a much more ripened sense of form for eleven minutes.
