About dOeK Festival #1

dOeK’s first festival took place on 9 December 2001 in the Felix Meritis on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. This festival gave dOeK musicians the chance to take stock of where they are and where they’ve been. In the afternoon the five core dOeK groups (Eric Boeren 4tet, Tobias Delius 4tet, Available Jelly, Trio Fuhler/Bennink/deJoode with Thomas Lehn, Wolter Wierbos solo) presented separate sets. Short and sweet and side by side, these condensed sets were the perfect way for an enthousiastic and attentive public to taste the unique and contrasting flavours of the groups. Extra spice came from guest artist Thomas Lehn. He produced an amazing array of sounds from his analog synthesizer while remaining tuned in to the musical dynamic of the group.

After a delicious Indonesian buffet, the evening chaos broke loose! Two substantial works based on ideas fromTristan Honsinger were presented. The pieces featured many and varied combinations of musicians, vocal artists, improvising dancers and artefacts. Many of the guest artists had a long history of collaboration with dOeK musicians. Picture the following: doeK musos en masse; dancer David Zambrano spinning over the floor to the warm sounds of bassist de Joode; Jaap Blonk’s unique and unsettling vocal antics; human drums; packingtape wrapped dancers; spoken word; a cello/double bass quartet; dancers and musicians appearing at upper floor windows, on tables, in the bar; a lone Han Bennink playing a snare and staring off sideways into the darkness..............

The Festival featured the following dOeK artists: Han Bennink, Eric Boeren, Tobias Delius, Cor Fuhler, Ernst Glerum, Tristan Honsinger, Wilbert de Joode, Michael Moore, Michael Vatcher, Wolter Wierbos, Joe Williamson. Guest musicians: Jaap Blonk, Hester Boverhuis, Thomas Lehn. Guest dancers: Katie Duck, Eileen Standley, David Zambrano. Artefacts and general mayhem: Jochem Hartz. <--
